The Trauma-Informed Neighborhood: A Planning Framework for Healing and Spatial Justice

Alexandra Heath and Dr. Krista Schroeder are advancing the field of trauma-informed planning by bridging public health, clinical care, and urban design. Their collaborative work focuses on how the built environment can serve as a healthcare intervention, shaping community well-being, resilience, and equity. Together, they have authored a pre-print manuscript, The Trauma-Informed Neighborhood: A Planning Framework for Healing and Spatial Justice, which introduces a systems-based approach for planners to integrate trauma science into neighborhood design and policy. Their framework highlights how spaces can either contribute to cycles of harm or foster healing, and provides planners with actionable strategies to support healthier, more just communities.

Our mission is to transform how built environments support mental health, equity, and long-term resilience, especially in communities impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and trauma through research, policy, design, and advocacy.
